Heavy or Irregular Bleeding After 50 : Do I Need a Hysterectomy?

I am 55 years old and have been experiencing heavy and irregular bleeding for the past few months, along with pain and discomfort. My doctor has suggested a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus), but I am scared of surgery. Is there any treatment available that can solve this problem without surgery?

At the age of 55, most women are approaching or have reached menopause, when periods usually stop. If you experience heavy or irregular bleeding after this age, it is considered abnormal and requires careful evaluation.

Doctors often recommend a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) based on tests such as ultrasound, MRI, or endometrial biopsy, to rule out serious conditions like fibroids, polyps, endometrial hyperplasia, or even cancer. While surgery is a permanent and effective solution, non-surgical treatments may be possible depending on the cause.

Hormonal therapy, such as progestin treatment or a hormonal IUD, can help if the bleeding is due to hormonal imbalance. Medications like tranexamic acid or NSAIDs may reduce bleeding and discomfort, and minimally invasive procedures like hysteroscopy or uterine ablation can sometimes address issues like polyps or small fibroids without full surgery.

However, post-menopausal bleeding should always be evaluated carefully to rule out cancer, and the best treatment option should be decided with your doctor after reviewing your test reports.
