Acne scars develop because acne triggers an inflammatory process deep within the skin, specifically in the dermis. Many people assume that acne will settle on its own within a few days, but once acne appears, the inflammation continues beneath the surface even after the pimple heals. Over time, this leads to a scar-remodeling process, which is why scars usually become visible after six months to one year rather than immediately. Patients often then notice changes like acne scars or enlarged pores. These scars can present in different forms such as ice-pick scars, rolling scars, and other textural changes, and they are most commonly the result of untreated or inadequately treated acne.
