Gynecomastia is one of the most commonly seen conditions in plastic and aesthetic practice and mainly occurs due to an increase in breast gland tissue caused by hormonal imbalance. When there is an imbalance between male and female hormones in the body, the breast gland starts enlarging, and as it increases in size, extra fat begins to accumulate around it.

This condition is more commonly seen in overweight or obese men because fat cells contain an enzyme called aromatase, which converts male hormones like testosterone into female hormones such as estrogen. Higher estrogen levels stimulate gland growth, making gynecomastia more noticeable in people with excess body fat.

However, gynecomastia can also occur in lean men. It can appear at different age groups commonly during puberty due to natural hormonal changes, where it may reduce on its own, or later in life when sudden hormonal fluctuations, stress, weight gain, or lifestyle changes occur, causing the gland to increase in size again.
