Soft, Painless Lump on the Back : Is It Serious and Does It Need Treatment?
For the past several years, I have had a rounded swelling on my back that feels soft and movable under the skin. It doesn’t hurt at all, but it has slowly become more noticeable over time. I’m concerned whether leaving it untreated could cause complications later. Is this something serious, and what are my treatment options?

This type of slow-growing, painless, soft swelling is most often a lipoma, which is a benign collection of fatty tissue beneath the skin. Lipomas are quite common and usually do not pose any health risk. They typically grow very slowly and remain harmless for years.
Medical treatment is usually not required unless the swelling starts causing discomfort, pressure, limitation of movement, or cosmetic concern. When removal is needed, it can be treated with a minor surgical procedure that is safe and effective. A doctor’s evaluation is advised if there is sudden growth, pain, or change in consistency.
