Irregular Periods and Weight Gain in PCOS : Causes, Symptoms and Best Treatment Options

I recently got diagnosed with PCOS after some tests and a pelvic ultrasound. My periods have always been irregular; I sometimes don’t get them for 6–8 months, and then they come only after taking medicines. I also have weight gain, acne since my teenage years, and unwanted facial hair. I was given a 28-day pill earlier, which helped me get my period once, but I didn’t continue follow-up after that. I’m really confused about how serious my condition is and what I should do next. Do I need long-term treatment, and can the condition be managed without medicines?

According to you, it’s quite typical of PCOS, where hormonal imbalance affects periods, weight, skin, and hair growth. The irregular periods, acne, and unwanted hair all point toward this condition, and your ultrasound confirms PCOS, which supports the diagnosis. The good thing is that your thyroid levels seem normal, which rules out one common cause of irregular cycles.

Management of PCOS is usually a combination of lifestyle changes and medical support. Weight management plays a crucial role; losing even a small amount of weight can help regulate your periods naturally. Along with that, doctors often prescribe hormonal pills (like the 21-day or 28-day pills) for a few months to regulate cycles and control symptoms like acne and hair growth.

If you stop treatment in between or don’t follow up, the symptoms can return, which is why regular monitoring and consistency are important. While some people try home remedies, they may not be enough alone in moderate to severe PCOS cases. It’s best to continue proper treatment, follow a balanced diet, stay active, and have regular check-ups so the condition stays under control.
