Pain After Varicocele Surgery : Is It Normal, and How Long Does Recovery Take?
I had a varicocele surgery (microscopic varicocelectomy) around 2 months ago. Recently, I still feel slight pain or sensitivity when I touch my left testicle, especially from the lower side. I got a follow-up done, including a Doppler scan, and the doctor mentioned a small cyst and some vein prominence but said it’s nothing serious. I’m just worried if this is normal or if something went wrong with the surgery. Also, is this the best procedure, or are there better options available now?

The way you’re experiencing it is quite common after varicocele surgery, especially within the first few months. Mild pain or sensitivity to touch can persist for up to 3 months, and sometimes even a little longer depending on individual healing. Since your follow-up scan and examination didn’t show any major concern, it’s reassuring that the surgery has likely been done properly.
Microscopic varicocelectomy is actually considered one of the best and most effective procedures for varicocele even today. There haven’t been major advancements in surgical techniques in recent years that outperform it. While a nonsurgical option called embolization does exist, it tends to have a higher recurrence rate, so surgery remains the preferred choice in most cases.
Findings like a small cyst or mild vein prominence after surgery are usually temporary and part of the healing process. The body takes time to adjust, and complete recovery, including internal healing, can take around 4 to 6 months.
At this stage, the best approach is to wait and monitor your symptoms. If the pain is mild, only on touch, and not increasing, there’s usually nothing to worry about. A repeat scan after 6 months can give a clearer picture of recovery
