Leg Cyst or Lump: Causes, Diagnosis, Biopsy & When Surgery is Needed

I have a swelling or lump on my leg that has been present for around 3–4 years. Initially, it was painless and stable in size, but over time it has slowly increased a little. Currently, it has remained almost the same size for the past 6–8 months. There is no direct pain in the lump, but I do feel some discomfort or pain in the surrounding area of the leg. When I press it, it feels hard and does not move. I once had it checked, and after pressing it, the size seemed to increase slightly. I want to understand what kind of swelling this could be, whether it is something serious, and what tests or treatment would be required to manage it properly.

Based on your description, the swelling in your leg could be one of the common types of soft tissue lumps, such as a cyst (fluid-filled swelling) or a solid mass like a lipoma or other tissue growth. Since it is hard, non-movable, and has shown a gradual increase in size over time, it is important to evaluate it properly rather than ignoring it.

Not all swellings are dangerous, but any long-standing lump should be assessed to rule out more serious conditions. Typically, the next step involves clinical examination followed by imaging tests like an ultrasound or MRI to understand its nature. In most cases, the recommended treatment is surgical removal of the lump, especially if there is uncertainty about its type.

Once removed, the tissue is sent for biopsy, which is the most reliable way to confirm whether it is benign (non-cancerous) or something that requires further treatment. Early diagnosis and timely management ensure better outcomes and peace of mind.
