Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) commonly causes fever, painful mouth sores, and a rash or small blisters on the hands, feet, and sometimes the buttocks or legs. Children may also have a sore throat, reduced appetite, irritability, and tiredness. The illness is usually caused by a virus and spreads easily among young children.

Most children recover within 7 to 10 days with rest, plenty of fluids, and supportive care. Contact your pediatrician if your child has a high or persistent fever, is unable to drink fluids because of mouth pain, shows signs of dehydration, or if the symptoms are severe or not improving after several days. Seek emergency care if your child becomes very drowsy, has difficulty breathing, or develops a seizure.
