Swollen lymph nodes in a child’s neck are most commonly caused by infections, such as a cold, sore throat, ear infection, or other viral illnesses. The glands may remain enlarged for several weeks even after the infection has resolved. In most cases, they are not a sign of a serious condition.
However, if the lymph nodes continue to enlarge, persist for more than 4 to 6 weeks, are very hard or fixed, are larger than about 2 cm, or are accompanied by persistent fever, weight loss, night sweats, or difficulty swallowing or breathing, your child should be evaluated by a pediatrician. Further tests may be recommended to determine the underlying cause.
