I am nervous about bleeding and complications after tonsillectomy. How common is post-surgery bleeding in children or adults, and what signs should make us call the doctor immediately?

Post-operative bleeding occurs in a small percentage of cases, more commonly in adults than children. It usually happens within the first 24 hours or after 5–10 days. Warning signs include bright red blood, repeated vomiting of blood, or persistent severe pain. Minor oozing is often normal and manageable. Patients should contact ENT immediately if significant bleeding occurs. Surgeons take precautions during surgery to minimize risks, and with proper care, complications remain rare.
