Q

Is Tonsillectomy Safe for Children with Enlarged Tonsils and How Fast Is Recovery?Tonsillectomy

My son snores heavily and sometimes struggles to breathe during sleep. The doctor says enlarged tonsils are the reason and suggested surgery. I am worried about anesthesia and post-surgery complications. Is tonsillectomy safe for children, and how long does it take before he can eat and sleep normally again?

Tonsillectomy is commonly performed in children and is very safe under modern anesthesia techniques. Complications are rare but can include bleeding or infection, which is why close post-operative monitoring is important. Children usually resume eating soft foods within a few days and gradually return to normal meals within 1–2 weeks. Sleep and breathing often improve quickly once swelling decreases, though full comfort may take several days. Pain management, hydration, and avoiding rough play or swimming during recovery are key to smooth healing.
