Funicular Hydrocele: Are Tablets Effective or Is Surgery Necessary?Hydrocele
1 month ago
I was told I might have a funicular hydrocele, and my doctor recommended a transillumination test for diagnosis. Is there any tablet for hydrocele that works, or is surgery the only option? If I undergo surgery, what is the hydrocele surgery recovery time?

A funicular hydrocele is a type of fluid collection along the spermatic cord. The transillumination test that your doctor recommended helps confirm the diagnosis by shining light through the swelling.
Currently, no medication or tablet can completely treat a hydrocele, and painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen only relieve discomfort temporarily. For persistent, large, or uncomfortable hydroceles, surgery is the only definitive treatment. Recovery after surgery usually takes 1–2 weeks for basic activities, and complete healing may take 4–6 weeks.
In newborns, hydroceles are often due to incomplete closure of the processus vaginalis and usually resolve on their own within the first year. Surgery is rarely needed in infants unless the hydrocele persists beyond 12–18 months or is associated with a hernia.
