Can an ACL tear be fully fixed with physiotherapy, or is surgery the only permanent solution?

I injured my knee six months ago and have been undergoing physiotherapy for an ACL tear. My knee still gives way sometimes. Is surgery the only permanent solution, or can structured rehab fix it without surgery?

If the knee continues to give way despite structured rehabilitation, surgery is usually recommended for permanent stability. Physiotherapy alone can strengthen muscles and improve function but may not fully prevent episodes of instability, especially in active individuals. Surgery restores mechanical stability, reducing the risk of meniscus damage or early arthritis. Post-surgery physiotherapy builds strength and flexibility to return safely to sports or demanding activities. Your lifestyle goals and activity level play a key role in deciding between conservative and surgical management. Regular assessment by your doctor helps ensure the best long-term outcome.
