Adenomyosis Explained : Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment Options for Women

I am 40 years old and have been experiencing very heavy periods along with severe cramps and prolonged menstrual bleeding. My doctor mentioned the possibility of adenomyosis after an ultrasound. I am not fully clear about what this condition means and how it differs from other uterine problems. Could you please explain it in detail and guide me on treatment options?

Adenomyosis is a condition where the inner lining of the uterus grows into the muscular wall of the uterus. This leads to an enlarged uterus, heavy menstrual bleeding and painful periods. It is commonly seen in women in their 30s and 40s, especially after childbirth. Symptoms include prolonged or heavy periods, severe menstrual cramps and pelvic discomfort.

Diagnosis is usually made through ultrasound or MRI imaging. Treatment depends on symptom severity and patient preference. Mild cases can be managed with medications such as pain relievers and hormonal therapy. In severe cases where symptoms significantly affect quality of life, surgical options such as hysterectomy may be considered.

A gynecologist will evaluate the condition and recommend the most suitable treatment based on individual needs.
