My mother keeps delaying gynaecology checkups despite iregular periods and severe cramps because she feelsvery uncomfortable discussing these issues in front of anybody. Is this hesitation common among women?

Yes — this hesitation is very common, especially in many women who feel uncomfortable discussing menstrual or pelvic symptoms, even when they are significant. In clinical practice, I’ve seen that irregular periods and severe cramps are often tolerated for years simply due to embarrassment, normalization of pain, or prioritizing family responsibilities over personal health.
The important thing to understand is that symptoms like irregular cycles or severe pain are not something to “adjust to” indefinitely. They can be related to conditions like hormonal imbalance, fibroids, endometriosis, or other treatable issues — and early evaluation usually makes management much simpler.
From a medical point of view, a gynecology consultation is a routine and professional setting. Nothing in it is unusual or embarrassing for the doctor — it’s a standard part of care. The earlier these symptoms are addressed, the easier it is to treat and improve quality of life.
