How should I treat an infected sebaceous cyst on my back and prevent recurrence ?
I have a sebaceous cyst on my back which was initially small and painless. Over the past month, it became slightly painful, swollen, and reddish and started oozing some fluid. I tried antibiotics, but it did not improve. I want to know if the cyst can be removed now, what the procedure involves, how long it will take, and whether it will come back in the future.”

The cyst on your back is a sebaceous cyst that has become infected. Antibiotics alone cannot remove it; they only reduce inflammation. The recommended treatment is to surgically remove the infected material. A small incision is made, all pus and cyst contents are removed, and the cyst’s punctum (black dot) is excised. The wound is left open and dressed daily for 10–15 days until it heals, after which it can be stitched. The procedure takes about an hour under anesthesia, with admission typically for one day. Once the cyst and its punctum are completely removed, it will not recur.”
