Is watchful waiting a safe option for large uterine fibroids?
I have a rather large fibroid measuring around 9.5 x 8.5 x 6 centimeters. my gynecologist recommended referring to a surgeon for either laparoscopy or open surgery, which may even lead to hysterectomy. I, however, decided on watchful waitinh because I have absolutely zero symptoms in terms of pain or bleeding etc., and I'm soon to be 43 so I thought time "might" be on my side (I am aware of potential surge in hormones before menopause). Am I on the right track? I'm planning on getting it measured every 6 months. Is that sensible? and at what growth rate or size would I have no choice but surgery?

Watchful waiting can be a reasonable approach for fibroids that are not causing symptoms, especially as you approach menopause, since fibroids often shrink after menopause due to reduced estrogen levels. Monitoring every 6 months with ultrasound is a sensible plan to track any changes in size. However, if the fibroid grows rapidly, starts causing symptoms like heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, or pressure on surrounding organs, surgical intervention may become necessary, your doctor can guide you on specific thresholds based on your overall health. It’s advisable to stay in close communication with your gynecologist throughout this period.
