IVF First Attempt : Can It Fail? What You Should Know

We are planning for IVF, but many people are saying that it’s not necessary that IVF works in the first attempt. Is that true? Can pregnancy fail even in the first cycle?

Yes, it’s true that IVF does not guarantee pregnancy in the first attempt, but that does not mean it never works the first time. Many patients do conceive in their very first IVF cycle, while some may not. If the first attempt doesn’t work, we always try to find the exact reason whether there was a genetic issue in the embryos, a problem in the uterine lining, or something happening at the molecular level that isn’t visible on ultrasound.

Based on that, we modify the protocol, change the technique, or add supportive treatments to improve the chances in the next cycle. Unless the eggs, sperm, or embryos are extremely poor in quality, there is always a way to work on improving the chances, and many patients conceive in their second attempt as well.
