I am overweight and considering liposuction for my tummy. Can liposuction help me lose weight, and is it safe if I have diabetes and hypothyroidism?

Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, but rather a body contouring treatment designed to remove stubborn fat from specific areas like the abdomen, thighs, or arms. In one session, typically around 6–8 liters of fat can be removed, which roughly translates to about 3 kg weight loss. So, while it can help reduce inches (around 3–4 inches from the tummy), it will not significantly reduce your overall body weight.

If your main concern is a flatter abdomen, liposuction can help improve shape, but if there is loose skin or muscle laxity, then a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) may be a better option as it tightens muscles and removes excess skin.

Regarding cellulite, liposuction does not effectively treat cellulite, so expectations should be realistic. Also, visible transformation may be subtle, and others may not easily notice major weight loss changes.

Since you have diabetes and hypothyroidism, safety becomes very important. Large-volume liposuction is not considered ideal in patients with comorbidities unless your conditions are well-controlled. Before surgery, you will need physician clearance and anesthetist fitness to ensure it is safe for you.

Recovery is usually quick, and most patients can return to daily activities within 1–2 days, but multiple areas may require separate sessions with a gap of 1.5 to 2 months.
