Ovarian Cyst Removal vs Ovary Removal : What Should I Choose?

I am 44 years old and have two children. My CA-125 test came back normal. I have an ovarian cyst, and I’m confused about whether only the cyst should be removed or the entire ovary. Is it possible to safely remove just the cyst while preserving the ovary? Also, what happens if the biopsy shows something serious, and what is the usual recovery like after surgery?

In your case, since your CA-125 is normal and you are 44 years old with completed family, both options can be considered depending on the intraoperative findings and your doctor’s assessment. In many cases, a laparoscopic approach is used, where the cyst is removed through small ports, and the ovary can often be preserved if the cyst appears benign.

However, the final decision sometimes depends on the biopsy (histopathology) report. If there is any suspicion of malignancy during or after surgery, further procedures may be required. Removing one ovary at your age generally does not cause significant issues, as the other ovary can continue to function.

Post-surgery, recovery is usually smooth. Most patients are discharged within a day or two, stitches are reviewed and managed within a week, and long bed rest is typically not required. A detailed discussion with your surgeon will help finalize the safest and most appropriate plan for your situation.
