Rapidly Growing Ovarian Cysts Normal or a Warning Sign?

My ovarian cyst was 2 cm last month, and now the scan shows it has grown to 4.5 cm. How fast do ovarian cysts usually grow, and what does rapid growth indicate? Should I be worried about cancer risk, or can normal cysts also grow this quickly?

Ovarian cysts can vary widely in growth, depending on their type and cause. Small functional cysts may grow or shrink within a few weeks and sometimes even double in size, while other cysts, like dermoid or endometriomas, may grow more slowly.

A growth from 2 cm to 4.5 cm over a month is noticeable but not uncommon for certain benign cysts. Rapid growth does not automatically indicate cancer, but it does warrant careful monitoring, especially if there are symptoms like persistent pain, bloating, or irregular periods.

Your doctor may recommend repeat ultrasounds, blood tests like CA-125 in certain cases, or additional imaging to ensure the cyst is benign and to decide whether surgery or continued observation is needed.
