Post-Fistula Surgery: Is Smelly Discharge Normal or a Sign of Infection?

I had fistula surgery recently and I’ve noticed a smelly discharge from the operated area. Is this a normal part of the healing process or could it be a sign of infection/complication? How long does discharge usually last after fistula surgery, and when should I be concerned enough to see my doctor?

Some discharge after fistula surgery can be normal as part of the healing process, especially if it’s clear or slightly yellowish.

However, a smelly discharge may indicate an infection or other complication and should be taken seriously. Discharge can last for a few weeks, but if it persists, worsens, or is accompanied by increased pain, redness, swelling, or fever, you should contact your doctor promptly.

It’s always best to get a follow-up assessment to rule out infection or any other issues. Don’t hesitate to seek medical advice to ensure proper healing and avoid complications
