Severe Sore Throat After Cold : Why It Persists Even After Antibiotics
3 weeks ago
I recently had a bad episode of fever, headache, cold, and throat pain for which I was prescribed antibiotics. While most of my symptoms have improved over the past week, my sore throat is still quite severe. I have been doing saltwater and Betadine gargles, but there is no significant relief. I also have a dry cough and slight difficulty swallowing, though I don’t have fever now. Do I need another course of antibiotics, or is this something that will resolve on its own?

Your symptoms are most likely due to post-viral irritation, which can persist even after the initial infection has settled. Since you no longer have fever or significant active infection signs, starting another antibiotic is usually not necessary. Such throat discomfort typically improves gradually over a few days with supportive care.
However, if your symptoms do not improve within 3–4 days or worsen, it is advisable to visit a doctor for a detailed examination to rule out any ongoing infection or complication.
