Is malaria a communicable disease? Can it spread from one person to another?

My neighborhood friend was recently diagnosed with malaria, and since then, I’ve been quite anxious about my safety. We live in close proximity, and our kids often play together. I’m confused about whether malaria can spread directly from one person to another like a viral infection or if it only happens through mosquito bites. Do I need to take any special precautions at home to prevent it from spreading within the family?

Malaria is a communicable disease, but it does not spread directly from person to person through casual contact like touching, talking, or sharing food.

It spreads through the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito. The mosquito carries the parasite from an infected person and transmits it to another person through its bite.

So, while your neighbor having malaria does not directly put your family at risk, the presence of mosquitoes in the area does. The best protection is to prevent mosquito bites by using nets, repellents, and keeping surroundings clean.
