Could something coming out during stool be rectal prolapse in old age?

My grandfather says something comes out while passing stool and then goes back later. He feels embarassed discusing about this openly. Could this be rectal prolapse and is surgery the only option at that age?

What you’re describing — something coming out during stool and then going back in,it’s very suggestive of either prolapsing piles  or rectal prolapse, depending on what exactly is happening.

This is actually quite common in elderly patients, and embarrassment often delays proper diagnosis. The key difference is that in hemorrhoids, the tissue is usually smaller and may go back on its own, while in true rectal prolapse a larger segment of the rectum comes out.
Now regarding treatment  surgery is not automatically the first or only option at this age. We always assess overall health, severity of prolapse, and symptoms. In mild cases, we may manage it with stool regulation, diet changes, and supportive measures. However, if it is true rectal prolapse causing discomfort, bleeding, or hygiene issues, then surgical correction often gives the most definitive and long-term relief and age alone is not a barrier if the patient is fit.

The most important step is a proper examination. These conditions are very treatable, and early assessment usually helps avoid worsening symptoms and complications. You can avail free consultation at Pristyn Care.
