Genetic Testing Before Embryo Transfer is It Necessary?

My sister’s doctor mentioned pre-implantation genetic testing before the embryo transfer due to previous miscarriages. She is scared about the procedure and whether it is really necessary. How do doctors decide which patients should undergo genetic testing before transfer, and does it improve the chance of a healthy pregnancy?

Pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT) is recommended for patients with repeated IVF failures, recurrent miscarriages, advanced maternal age, or known genetic disorders. PGT screens embryos for chromosomal abnormalities before transfer, increasing the likelihood of successful implantation and a healthy pregnancy. The procedure involves a small biopsy from the embryo, which does not harm development. Doctors assess individual history, genetic risk factors, and age to determine necessity. While it doesn’t guarantee success, PGT significantly reduces miscarriage risk and improves the probability of a healthy baby, offering reassurance for couples with previous pregnancy losses.
