How Long Does Teenage Gynecomastia Last?

My teenage son (17 years old) has developed small lumps under his chest, and our family doctor said it could be puberty-related gynecomastia. Should we wait for it to go away naturally or get it checked by an endocrinologist? How do we know if it’s temporary or something serious?

If your teenage son has small lumps under his chest and your doctor says it may be puberty-related gynecomastia, this is usually normal and often goes away on its own within 6–12 months. Most cases are temporary and related to hormonal changes during puberty. You should watch for signs like rapid growth, pain, or asymmetry. If these occur or if you want reassurance, an endocrinologist can check hormone levels and make sure nothing else is causing it. In most teens, no treatment is needed, and it resolves naturally.
