Why Do My Breasts Hurt After Sex?

I've noticed my breasts feel tender or sore for a day or two after sex. It doesn't happen every time. I'm wondering if this is hormonal, and whether it could indicate something I should be concerned about.

Breast tenderness after sex is most likely hormonal and not a cause for concern.

Sexual arousal and orgasm release hormones including oxytocin and prolactin. These cause temporary changes in breast tissue – increased blood flow and glandular sensitivity. For some women, this shows up as tenderness or soreness lasting a few hours to a couple of days. It’s more noticeable in the second half of the cycle (days 14-28) when progesterone is already elevated and breast tissue is naturally more sensitive.
