What is the name of the world’s first malaria vaccine, and should we consider it?
I recently came across a news article mentioning that a malaria vaccine has finally been introduced somewhere in the world. It made me curious because malaria has been such a common illness in our country, especially during monsoon. I have young children at home, and I’m always worried about them falling sick due to mosquito bites. So I wanted to understand what is the name of this vaccine, and is it something that will be available for us as well? Should families like ours be thinking about it for prevention in the future?

The world’s first approved malaria vaccine is called RTS,S/AS01 (also known as Mosquirix). It has been recommended by the WHO primarily for use in children in regions where malaria is highly common, especially in parts of Africa.
Another newer vaccine called R21/Matrix-M has also been introduced and is showing promising results. In India, these vaccines are not yet part of routine vaccination programs. Prevention still mainly relies on mosquito control and personal protection.
However, as research progresses, vaccines may become more widely available in the future. If you’re concerned, it’s best to discuss this with a healthcare provider who can guide you based on your region and risk level.
