Painful Tongue Ulcer After Injury : Do I Need Antibiotics or Just Care?
I recently injured my tongue while cleaning it, and since then I developed a painful ulcer with redness and slight bleeding. For a day or two, I was not even able to eat properly, and there was a lot of burning sensation and excess saliva. It has improved a bit now, but the ulcer is still present. I am worried whether this could turn into an infection and if I need antibiotics. Also, what kind of food should I eat and what precautions should I take to heal faster?

This type of tongue ulcer is most likely due to local injury and usually heals on its own without needing antibiotics, especially if there is no fever or signs of infection. The key is to avoid further irritation do not clean or scrape the tongue, and avoid spicy, salty, or hot foods as they can worsen the pain.
Stick to soft, bland, and slightly cold foods like yogurt, ice cream, or milkshakes to soothe the area. Medicated gels can be applied before and after meals to reduce discomfort and promote healing. Simple rinsing is sufficient for hygiene. If the pain increases, fever develops, or healing does not improve, a clinical examination may be needed to rule out infection.
