Is hysterectomy the only solution for fibroids or are there safer alternatives?

I’ve been advised hysterectomy because of fibroids, but I’m very anxious. Is hysterectomy the only permanent solution, or are there safer alternatives like medicines, injections, or minimally invasive procedures?

Your anxiety is completely understandable — hysterectomy feels like a very big step. While it is indeed the most permanent solution, it’s not the only option. Depending on the size, number, and location of fibroids, other treatments may be considered.
- Medicines and hormonal injections can temporarily shrink fibroids and control symptoms, but once treatment stops, fibroids may grow again.
- Minimally invasive procedures such as laparoscopic myomectomy (removing only the fibroids), uterine artery embolization (blocking blood supply to shrink fibroids), or hysteroscopic resection (removing fibroids inside the uterine cavity) may be safer options if preserving the uterus is important.
The choice depends on whether you’ve completed your family, your age, severity of symptoms, and overall health. Asking for a second opinion and requesting imaging tests like ultrasound or MRI can give a clearer idea of which approach is most suitable for you.
