Can fibroids come back after myomectomy and how can recurrence be prevented?

I had a myomectomy for fibroids last year, but my symptoms are coming back. Is it normal for fibroids to grow again after surgery? How can recurrence be prevented?

Yes, it is possible for fibroids to come back even after a successful myomectomy. This is because the surgery removes existing fibroids but doesn’t prevent new ones from developing. The recurrence rate depends on factors like age, number of fibroids removed, and hormonal levels.
Preventing fibroids from regrowing completely isn’t always possible, but maintaining a healthy weight, managing estrogen levels, and regular monitoring can help. Some women are advised to take hormonal treatments temporarily to slow regrowth.
If symptoms are returning quickly, your doctor may suggest follow-up imaging (ultrasound or MRI) to check the size and location of new fibroids. Based on that, you can discuss whether further treatment or lifestyle adjustments will help.
