Armpit Fat Consultation : Symptoms, Surgery & Recovery
2 months ago
I have extra tissue near my armpit on one side, which has gradually increased over the past few years. It causes slight discomfort during activities like waxing and also looks visible in certain clothing. I’m not pregnant or breastfeeding, and I don’t have major health issues except a past mild thyroid variation. I want to understand what this condition is, whether it will go away on its own, and if surgery is necessary. Also, what are the treatment options, recovery time, and risks involved?

From what you’ve described, this appears to be axillary breast tissue, which is essentially extra breast-like tissue present in the armpit area. In many cases, this develops due to hormonal and anatomical reasons and does not resolve on its own, especially when it has been present for several years.
If the concern is mainly cosmetic or if you are experiencing discomfort, the definitive treatment is surgical removal. The procedure typically involves liposuction to remove the fatty component and a small incision in the natural crease of the armpit to remove the glandular tissue. The scar is usually well-hidden in the armpit folds.
The surgery is generally safe and is done under anesthesia, with a procedure time of around 45 minutes to 1 hour. Most patients can resume routine activities within a couple of days, while avoiding heavy exercise, gym workouts, swimming, and lifting weights for about 4–6 weeks. Pain is usually manageable with medications, and recovery is gradual.
If surgery is not done, the condition is not harmful, but the tissue may remain the same or increase slightly over time. A proper clinical evaluation and basic tests (including thyroid control if needed) are recommended before proceeding with surgery to ensure safety and the best outcome.
