Endometriotic Ovarian Cyst – Is Surgery Necessary and Will It Affect Fertility?
I was recently diagnosed with an ovarian cyst, specifically an endometriotic cyst, as seen in my reports. My periods are regular but have become shorter (2–3 days) with reduced flow. I want to understand what causes this condition and whether surgery is necessary. Can it be treated with medicines or injections? Also, can this affect my future fertility, and is there a chance of recurrence?

An endometriotic cyst (also called an endometrioma) usually occurs due to endometriosis, where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, often in the ovaries.
In cases where the cyst is large or persistent, medicines or injections alone are usually not effective, and surgical removal becomes necessary. Surgery helps in clearing the cyst and preventing further complications. However, there is a possibility of recurrence even after treatment. Regarding fertility, if left untreated, such cysts can impact ovarian function and future fertility, which is why timely management is important.
Your doctor may advise tests like tumor markers to confirm that the cyst is non-cancerous and fertility tests to assess ovarian reserve. Proper evaluation and treatment planning will help protect your reproductive health.
