Persistent Issues After Tympanoplasty: Is Revision Needed?

I had tympanoplasty done two years ago, but I still get occasional ear discharge and reduced hearing. Is this normal or could it mean the surgery failed? Can tympanoplasty be repeated if it doesn’t succeed the first time?

Occasional discharge after surgery is not normal and may suggest that the graft did not take fully or that infection has returned. Reduced hearing could also mean there is a problem with the middle ear bones. Tympanoplasty can be repeated if it was not successful the first time. An ENT doctor will usually do a fresh evaluation and hearing test before deciding on the best next step.
