Toric vs Monofocal vs Trifocal Lens: Which Intraocular Lens is Best for Cataract Surgery?

I am confused about which lens to choose for my eye surgery. Do I need a toric lens, or will a monofocal or trifocal lens work for me? I want the best possible vision, especially in one eye. Can you explain the differences and help me decide which option is suitable?

The choice of lens depends mainly on your eye power and the presence of cylindrical (astigmatism) error. Toric lenses are specifically recommended when cylindrical power is significant, as they correct astigmatism more accurately. If your cylindrical power is low, a non-toric lens such as monofocal or trifocal can still give good results.

Monofocal lenses provide excellent clarity for distance vision, but you may need glasses for near work. Trifocal lenses, such as Alcon Acrisof Vivity/Trifocal Lens, are advanced options designed to provide clear vision at multiple distances (near, intermediate, and far), reducing dependency on glasses.

If your goal is to achieve the clearest possible vision with minimal dependence on glasses, advanced monofocal or trifocal lenses can be considered. However, if there is notable cylindrical power, a toric version of these lenses may provide better visual quality.

The final decision should always be confirmed after a detailed eye examination and discussion with your surgeon, who will recommend the most suitable lens based on your eye measurements and visual needs.
