Ovarian cysts vs PCOS difference, relation, and diagnosis explained ?

My daughter is 22 and has been diagnosed with multiple ovarian cysts. She has irregular periods and acne, so the doctor mentioned it could be related to PCOS. I’m confused, are ovarian cysts and PCOS the same thing, or two different problems?

They are related but not the same. In PCOS the ultrasound often shows many small follicles that look like cysts, but these are actually immature follicles that did not release an egg and come with a hormonal pattern that causes irregular periods and acne. Other ovarian cysts, such as functional cysts, dermoid cysts, or endometriomas, have different causes and need different treatment. The doctor will use symptoms, blood tests and the ultrasound together to decide whether the picture fits PCOS or another type of cyst.
