Ovarian cyst recurrence why it happens and how doctors decide on further treatment ?

I had an ovarian cyst surgery last year, but now another cyst has appeared on the same side. Is it common for cysts to come back even after removal? How do doctors decide whether to operate again or just monitor with scans?

Recurrence depends on the cyst type. Functional cysts often come and go with the cycle and can recur. Endometriomas, the cysts linked to endometriosis, tend to have a higher recurrence rate after surgery than simple cysts. When a new cyst is found, doctors look at its size, whether it is causing symptoms, how it looks on ultrasound, and how fast it is growing. If it is small and not painful, monitoring with repeat scans is a reasonable choice. If it is large, painful, growing, or looks suspicious, surgery may be advised. Reviewing your previous surgery notes and doing a targeted ultrasound helps the team choose the safest plan.
