How soon does vision become clear after cataract surgery?

What is the typical recovery timeline after cataract surgery? How long does it take before vision becomes clear, and when can I safely return to everyday activities like driving, working on a computer, cooking, or exercising? Are there any restrictions I should strictly follow?

Most people notice their vision starting to clear within a day or two after cataract surgery, though it can still feel a bit blurry or sensitive to light in the first 24-48 hours. Over the next 1-2 weeks, the eye usually becomes more comfortable and vision keeps sharpening, with full healing and completely stable vision often taking about 4-6 weeks. During this period, your doctor may adjust drops and will tell you when it’s safe to update your glasses prescription if needed.

Light everyday activities like walking around the house, watching TV, light cooking, and using a computer are often allowed within a few days, as long as you feel comfortable. Driving is usually safe once your surgeon confirms your vision meets legal standards, often after the first follow‑up visit. However, you should strictly avoid rubbing your eye, heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, swimming, using eye makeup, or getting unclean water in the eye for at least 1-2 weeks, or as long as your doctor advises. Following the prescribed eye drops schedule and wearing the protective shield at night are key to a smooth, problem‑free recovery.
