In sebaceous cyst surgery, a small incision is made directly over the cyst. A sebaceous cyst has a capsule or covering layer around it, and it is very important to remove the cyst along with this capsule intact. If the capsule is not completely removed, the cyst can come back.

A common problem with sebaceous cysts is infection. Unlike lipomas, which usually do not get infected, sebaceous cysts can easily become infected due to scratching, itching, or minor trauma. When infected, the cyst becomes painful, and there are visible skin changes around the area. In such cases, the infected cyst and all infected tissue need to be removed surgically.

Sebaceous cysts, like lipomas, can occur anywhere on the body, and surgical removal is the definitive treatment.
