Vaginal Discharge : Causes, Tests and Treatment for Women Over 40
4 weeks ago
I'm 45 years old and have a history of C-section, thyroid, and high BP. For the past few months, I’ve been experiencing a continuous watery vaginal discharge. It’s not thick, white, or colored; it just feels like water and keeps my undergarments wet throughout the day and even at night. Earlier, I also had an itching and burning sensation, but that has reduced now. My periods have become regular recently, although I had heavy bleeding for a few months before. I’m a bit worried about what could be the reason for this kind of discharge, and what tests or treatment should I consider?

Based on your symptoms, a continuous watery discharge for such a long duration should definitely be evaluated properly. Even though it doesn’t look like a typical infection (like thick white discharge), it can still be related to vaginal infection, urinary infection, or even hormonal and metabolic issues like high blood sugar levels, especially since you haven’t checked your sugars recently.
The first step would be to get some basic tests done, including fasting and post-meal blood sugar levels, along with a urine routine and culture test. These help identify if there’s any underlying infection or diabetes contributing to your symptoms.
In the meantime, treatment usually involves a short course of antibiotics and antifungal vaginal tablets to control any possible infection. The vaginal tablet works best when inserted properly at bedtime so it stays inside and gives full effect. Most patients start noticing improvements within a week.
If the discharge does not reduce after medication, further evaluation, like a detailed vaginal examination or discharge test, may be required to find the exact cause and treat it accordingly.
