Can uterine fibroids turn cancerous and how are they diagnosed?

Are uterine fibroids linked to cancer in any way? I read online that sometimes tumors can be cancerous, and now I’m very scared. How do doctors confirm whether a fibroid is benign or malignant before surgery?

This is a very common concern, and I want to reassure you. The vast majority of fibroids are benign (non-cancerous). The chance of a fibroid being cancerous (a rare tumor called leiomyosarcoma) is extremely low.
Doctors usually assess based on your age, symptoms, and imaging results. Ultrasound and MRI scans help identify unusual features such as very rapid growth or irregular structure. If anything suspicious is seen, further tests may be recommended.
Most fibroids behave in a typical pattern, and once removed, they can be sent for histopathology (lab testing) to confirm they are benign. If you are very anxious, discussing additional imaging or a second evaluation can give you peace of mind before surgery.
