- Higher levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), measured on a home ovulation kit
- Change in the colour of cervical mucus, or vaginal discharge
- Rise in basal body temperature, typically 1/2 to 1 degree
- Bloating
- Light spotting
- Slight pain or cramping in your side
- Breast tenderness
Every woman has a fertility window. It includes the days in a woman's menstrual cycle when she can successfully become pregnant. The fertility window of a woman depends on the length of her menstrual cycle. The fertile window begins the day the ovaries release an egg and the five days ahead. Having sex during the fertility window increases the possibilities of a woman getting pregnant.
Common signs that you are ovulating include:
- Rise in the body temperature by 1-2 degrees
- Higher level of luteinizing hormone that can evaluated by using an ovulation kit at home
- Breast tenderness
- Bloating
- Vaginal discharge and cervical mucus may appear thinner
- Light spotting
- Abdominal cramping
If you know your LMP and the length of your menstrual cycle, you can easily find out when you are likely to ovulate.
Ovulation happens about 4 days before the next period starts.
If your menstrual cycle is of 28 days, you will ovulate around the 14th day of the first day of your LMP. Day 12, 13, and 14 will be your most fertile days.
If your menstrual cycle is of 21 days, you will ovulate around the 7th day of the first day of your LMP. Day 5,6, and 7 will be your most fertile days.
If your menstrual cycle is of 35 days, you will ovulate around the 21st day of the first day of your LMP. Day 19, 20, and 21 will be your most fertile days.
Your most fertile days are the three days leading up to and including the day of ovulation.
1. Know when you ovulate -
Ovulation can vary from month to month in the same woman, but usually happens 14 days before your next period. To keep a track of your ovulation days, you may use an at-home ovulation kit and check if there are any hormonal changes in your urine before your ovulation.
2. Have sex often during your fertile window -
Your chances of getting pregnant are the highest 1-2 days before your ovulation. But since the cycle and fertility window may vary month to month, the best thing to do is have frequent unprotected sex from at least 3 days before your ovulation day.
3. Keep a check on your weight -
If you are planning to get pregnant, prepare your body for the pregnancy. Being underweight or obese may affect your chances of getting pregnant. Do not indulge in strenuous physical activities but practice moderate exercises and try to stay fit.
4. Take prenatal vitamins -
Start taking prenatal vitamins before you plan your pregnancy. The baby's neural cord requires essential nutrients like folic acid, calcium, and iron from the very beginning of the pregnancy.
5. Educate yourself about pregnancy -
Whether or not this is your first baby, attending a childbirth class can help you be more prepared for the delivery. You will not only learn more about childcare, but you will get a chance to connect with other women who are going through the same phase.
6. Keep stress away -
Time and again, researchers have shown that stress makes pregnancy tough. Meditation, a relaxed walk in the harmony of nature, and yoga can help lower stress and promote a healthy pregnancy.
7. Check your medications-
Consult with your ob-gyne before taking any over-the-counter medications or supplements. Even non-steroidal drugs should be taken with recommendation since they can prove fatal for the blood vessels.
8. Eliminate toxins-
Alcohol, tobacco, and other toxins have a link with miscarriage, birth defects, and other severe pregnancy complications. Smoking, even if it is passive, can decrease the supply of oxygen to the baby.
9. Have sex often-
The chances of conceiving increases if you indulge in frequent sex at least 1-2 days around your ovulation date. Sperm can survive in a woman's body for up to 5 days. So, indulging in more sex can increase the chances of your pregnancy.
