Medical Treatment for Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Hearing Aids
When the ENT doctor diagnoses a hearing loss that cannot be treated medically, he/she might recommend a hearing aid evaluation and consultation with an audiologist. The appropriate hearing aid is necessary to cure the hearing loss or else it can have an adverse effect. Hearing aids can be either analog or digital.

- Analog hearing aids- This type of hearing aids convert sound into electrical signals and then amplify them. According to the environment around you, you can program the hearing aids to amplify the sounds.
- Digital hearing aids- This type of hearing aids convert sound into code of numbers and then again convert them back to sound.
Hearing Assistance Technologies
Doctors can sometimes recommend hearing assistance technologies instead of hearing aids. This technology is available in two forms-
- Signaling or Test Display Devices
This type of device is designed to convert sound into visual stimulus or written text.
- Assistive Listening Devices
These instruments only transmit sound directly to the ears or hearing aids. This reduces the effects of distance, noise, and reverberation.
Final words
The above-mentioned treatment options should be taken only after proper consultation with a doctor. The ENT doctor is able to diagnose the severity of the hearing loss and suggest the effective treatment option accordingly. Trying any treatment without the doctor’s consultation can later prove to be fatal. Hence, proper diagnosis followed by proper treatment is important.
