Will Having an Abortion Affect My Ability to Get Pregnant Later?

I had a surgical abortion last year and I'm now thinking about getting pregnant. I'm worried the procedure might have affected my uterus or fertility. What does the evidence say about abortion and future pregnancy?

For most women, a single uncomplicated abortion – medical or surgical – does not affect future fertility. This is well-supported by research.

Medical abortions (tablet-based): No impact on future fertility. The process is similar to a natural miscarriage and doesn’t involve any instruments entering the uterus.

Surgical abortions (D&C/MVA): The primary risk to future pregnancy is intrauterine adhesions (Asherman’s syndrome) – scar tissue that can form inside the uterus and affect implantation. This is uncommon after a single, uncomplicated procedure. Risk increases with repeated surgeries or untreated post-procedure infection.
