Why Is Cerclage Needed?

In some women, the cervix may:

  • Weaken or shorten prematurely
  • Open too early without contractions

This condition is called cervical insufficiency and can lead to miscarriage or preterm birth.

When Is Cervical Cerclage Recommended?

1. History of Recurrent Pregnancy Loss

  • Second-trimester miscarriages
  • Previous unexplained pregnancy losses

2. Previous Preterm Birth

  • Especially if caused by cervical weakness

3. Short Cervix on Ultrasound

  • Detected during routine pregnancy scans
  • Increased risk of early delivery

4. Cervical Opening in Current Pregnancy

  • Early dilation without pain or contractions
  • Requires urgent (emergency cerclage)

5. Known Cervical Insufficiency

  • Diagnosed in previous pregnancies

Types of Cervical Cerclage

1. Elective (Prophylactic) Cerclage

  • Done early in pregnancy (around 12–14 weeks)
  • Based on history

2. Ultrasound-Indicated Cerclage

  • Recommended when cervical shortening is detected

3. Emergency Cerclage

  • Done when the cervix has already started opening
