White discharge is very common in women. Many women experience different types of discharges during pregnancy especially second trimester. It is important to note the color, smell and amount of discharge during the second trimester. It may indicate the need for immediate medical attention. Is the discharge even normal during the second trimester of pregnancy?
Yes, it is normal to see white thin discharge during the second trimester. But if the discharge is green, yellow, filled with blood and smelly, immediately contact your doctor. This discharge may come along with pain, soreness or itching, so do not delay.

Reasons why there is white discharge during 2nd trimester of pregnancy
During pregnancy, the discharge is very normal. If it bothers you, wear panty liners or keep changing your underwear frequently. This is a change that is taking place in response to the pregnancy hormones and blood flow.
Leucorrhoea is one of the most common reasons for white discharge during second trimester. It is a thick white discharge with some odor. The secretion from cervix and vagina constitute this white discharge. During pregnancy, estrogen levels in the body increases further increasing the blood flow to the vagina. This produces the mucus with the white discharge. The white discharge is important as it protects the baby developing inside.
Bacterial vaginosis is the result of an imbalance in the vagina and is a serious concern during pregnancy. The chances of miscarriage or pre-term birth increase with bacterial vaginosis. Therefore, talk to a gynecologist about it.
Yeast infection or Vulvovaginal candidiasis is common during pregnancy. The pregnancy hormones disturb the pH balance of the vagina resulting in yeast infection. If there is itching, irritation and burning sensation in and around vagina along with thick discharge. The mucus is cotton-cheese like discharge along with painful urination and intercourse. Although it is not harmful for the baby contact you doctor for any doubts.
Sexually transmitted infections (STI)
If you notice a white discharge with foul smell and experience pain during sex or urination, it means there is bacterial transmission through genitals, oral or anal sex. Consult a doctor for the right advice and treatment.
Prevent a vaginal infection during pregnancy

- Use panty liners and avoid tampons during heavy discharge.
- Also ensure you wash yourself well while taking shower or bathtub.
- Do not use any fragrance if your discharge smells unpleasant, instead talk to the doctor.
