Diagnosis and treatment of vaginal wart

    Diagnosis of vaginal warts

External vaginal warts are visible and hence, don’t require any specific diagnostic test gynaecologists physically examine them. However, internal vaginal warts are quite challenging to diagnose and may require any of the following tests-

    • Pap Test –  Pap test is usually performed to screen non-visible human papillomavirus (HPV) and to detect early signs and symptoms of cervical cancer. In this test, the doctor collects the cell sample from the cervix and then sends it to the laboratory to examine any abnormal cells.
    • HPV test – This test is specifically recommended for women of age group 30-65  to detect the presence of  human papillomavirus (HPV).
    • Biopsy – The majority of vaginal warts cases do not require a biopsy. However, it is suggested only when HPV and pap tests fail to diagnose.
    • Blood test- Doctors usually suggest blood tests to check for other STDs often associated with genital warts.

    Treatment for vaginal warts

Some of the vaginal warts are clear without any treatment. However, suitable treatment reduces the risk of spreading the virus. Vaginal warts are treated by either medication or surgical procedures.

Topical treatments- Medications are usually suggested to treat small-size vaginal warts that cannot be removed through the laser procedure. Some common medications for vaginal warts include- Trichloroacetic Acid, Podophyllin and Podofilox (Condylox).

Laser treatment- It is usually done to kill vaginal warts of a bigger size. It is performed under local anaesthesia either at a gyne clinic or hospital under local anaesthesia. In this procedure, an intensive laser beam of light is targeted to kill the causative agent of vaginal warts.

What to expect during vaginal wart treatment?

Depending on the severity and size of the warts doctor plan a suitable treatment. Treatment basically involves either medication, surgery or home remedies, depending on the requirement.

    • For asymptomatic and small-size warts, doctors prescribe medications like- several creams, ointments or solutions. Imiquimod is the most common cream used to treat vaginal warts, it enhances a person’s immune system to fight their growth.
    • During pregnancy, doctors usually suggest cryotherapy (cryosurgery), which involves freezing warts. In this procedure, the doctor applies liquid nitrogen around warts to freeze them. You may feel a mild or moderate burning sensation during the treatment.

However, you can also try some home remedies for small-size warts, some of the home remedies for vaginal warts are as follows- applying tea tree oil, applying garlic extract, folate and B12 supplements.

    FAQs around Vaginal Wart

What are the other alternatives for vaginal wart treatment except for laser treatment?

Usually, if the vaginal wart is smaller and detected early in the stage, then it can be cured by medication. These medication boost your immune system’s ability to fight vaginal warts. But if vaginal warts are diagnosed later, then laser or surgical treatment is the only option to cure them permanently.

Can I undergo laser vaginal warts treatment during pregnancy?

Yes, it is safe for pregnant women and doesn’t cause any major risks to the mother or baby. But we suggest consulting your doctor before undergoing laser treatment. In some cases, the doctor is likely to suggest other methods for removing vaginal warts, such as freezing, cryosurgery, or medication.

What precautions do I need to take after vaginal wart removal treatment?

Your gynaecologists are likely to suggest aftercare instructions like – avoiding touching and scratching the area with your hand, as it can increase the risk of infection or contamination. There are higher chances of blisters and scabs after the laser treatment. It may take around 10-30 days for complete healing. Moreover, it also depends on the immune response of your body to the treatment procedure.

Does insurance cover vaginal wart treatment?

No, generally, the treatment for vaginal warts, either surgical or non-surgical, doesn’t cover by insurance. Insurance companies don’t compensate for such medical procedures.

How long is the treatment procedure for vaginal warts removal?

The treatment journey for vaginal warts completely depends on the type of treatment you are taking. For medication, it may take around a few months for vaginal warts to disappear. While in surgical treatment, recovery is likely to take about 2-3 weeks.

What are the common symptoms of vaginal warts?

Small-size vaginal warts are mostly asymptomatic, but larger-size warts can cause- itching and a burning sensation around the genital area, some women also experience vaginal discharge and bleeding.

How often do vaginal warts come back after the treatment?

HPV is a lifelong virus hence the chances of recurrence are quite high even after the treatment. However, you can consult your gynaecologist and can discuss the HPV vaccine treatment.

How long do home remedies take to remove vaginal warts?

Home remedies have been proven quite effective in treating vaginal warts. Some of the home remedies that you can try to treat vaginal warts are- apple cider vinegar, garlic extract and green tea.
