      Surgery Preparation

There are certain pre-surgery tips that can help you prepare for the LASIK procedure. Here are some things you should know before going for LASIK surgery –

      • You must inform your eye doctor about any ongoing medications before the LASIK surgery.
      • It is important to discuss your current medical condition (if any) with the concerned eye specialist to avoid any complications during the procedure.
      • It is not advisable to smoke or consume tobacco before the surgery.
      • Inform your doctor if you have a history of allergies related to anesthesia.
      • Do not eat or drink 8 to 9 hours prior to the surgery. Doctors generally recommend skipping dinner or refraining from eating anything after midnight.

      Procedure

LASIK surgery usually takes 15-20 minutes depending on the severity of the condition, medical health of the patient, surgical expertise of the surgeon, etc. Here is what you can expect during the LASIK surgery –

      • The doctor puts topical eye drops to numb the eyes and the area around the eye is washed and cleansed.
      • Patients may be given a sedative to help them relax.
      • The surgeon uses a lid speculum to hold the eye open and places a ring on the eye to create a section on the eye.
      • A microkeratome is attached to the ring and the corneal flap is created using the blade on the microkeratome.
      • The flap is opened by the surgeon and then removes the microkeratome and the ring.
      • The surgeon uses high-energy pulses from a computer-controlled laser to vaporize the tiny portions of the interiors of the cornea and reshape it.
      • Once the reshaping is done, the surgeon positions the flap back to its original position.
