What Is DJ Stent Removal Procedure?
A DJ stent or Double-J stent is a soft and hollow tube made of plastic, which is placed temporarily into the ureter after a kidney stones surgery. A stent may be placed for several reasons, such as to reduce sharp pain caused by a stone, allow drainage, and to help the kidneys function properly. A double-J stent is a unique stent with curved ends, which prevent it from slipping into the bladder or the kidneys.
A DJ stent is placed right after the surgery. However, it is removed after 6 weeks or 6 months of the surgery, depending upon the case. In some cases, the lifespan of the stent ends and a replacement might be required. An unattended or expired DJ stent can increase the risk of the following:
- Fragmentation of the stent
- Obstruction in urine flow
- Stone entering the bladder
- Stent migration, along with bleeding, infections, etc.
To avert these complications, it is advisable to get a DJ stent removed in time.
